Cataracts

WHAT IS A CATARACT?

A Cataract is defined as a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. The lens of the eye sits behind the pupil of the eye, and gives the eye prescription strength and focusing ability. The lens acts like a natural pair of glasses or a contact lens built right into the eye, focusing everything we see deep Into the back of the eye, onto the Retina.

When we are young, this lens is crystal clear, and lets us see things sharply. Over time, the lens can become cloudy or hazy, and limit one’s vision. This is a cataract.

-Blurry or Foggy Vision
-Decreased Night Vision
-Double Vision
-Colors appearing Dull
-Glasses no longer working well, or prescription keeps changing
-Glare from lights becomes intolerable, sometimes making driving at night very difficult

During your eye examination, Dr. Goldstick will be able to tell you if your symptoms are due to Cataracts, or possibly due to other conditions in your eye.

TREATMENT OF CATARACTS – CATARACT SURGERY

Cataract Surgery is painless, and typically takes only 15-20 minutes for Dr. Goldstick to perform in an outpatient surgery setting. The surgery involves removing the old, cloudy cataract lens from the eye, and replacing it with a new, clear plastic Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) in its place. This is similar to placing a contact lens permanently inside the eye.

With Cataract Surgery, the new IOL not only clears up the cloudiness, but because it has a PRESCRIPTION on it, the IOL can greatly reduce or even eliminate the patient’s need for glasses afterwards. Different types of IOLs are available to fix a patient’s Individual Prescription.
